Commercial Rate Terms
How freight and hire rates are quoted in practice across market segments.
Overview
Rate expression patterns
Rates are commonly stated as daily hire (pd), Worldscale (WS), or lumpsum (LS). Correct parsing of these tokens is central to downstream analytics.
Key Terms
WS (Worldscale)
Tanker freight index quoted as a percentage of a published flat rate.
Lumpsum (LS)
Single total freight amount for the voyage, not a daily rate.
TCE (Time Charter Equivalent)
Normalized earnings metric used to compare voyage and time-charter economics.
pmsa (plus minus)
Commercial shorthand indicating negotiable variance around a quoted level.
